January 22, 2014 — “Hello Elder . . . What city do we live in?”

“Hello Elders . . . What city do we live in?”

woah. HOW DO I START THIS?!  Remember how I kind of liked my mission last time I wrote all ya’ll? You might have thought I loved it then, and so did I, but then I got to 5 Mile Prairie. AKA: ‘SMILE’ PRAIRIE. Now I know what love is. 😉 I don’t know where to start…. SO I’ll just start with the week.
Sunday Night:
Transfer calls. “Your sweeping into 5-mile with Sister Busath.”
Me: You’re Joking.
Elder Adam: I don’t joke.

Monday: emailing. Seeing Sister Busath for the first time since we got the news.
Speechless. Laughter. And more speechlessness.

Tuesday: uniting to be companions.
Speechlessness. Laughter. Pure joy.
Okay… there wasn’t that much speechlessness… we were talking non-stop, because we are best friends. Let’s just say, 3 weeks ago, after an exchange with Sister Busath, I wrote in my journal that my DREAM would be to be companions with Sister Busath one day, if I could pick any Sister that I hadn’t been companions with. . . . Let me tell you, dreams come true.

Now let’s keep in mind, leaving Deer Park was hard- you all know how much I loved it- and I had to pray that I would feel God’s hand in it all, and I asked Him to help me feel His love. Well let’s just say I have felt more love this last week than I know how to receive.

We were picked up by our ward mission leaders wife, Sister Startin, on Tuesday, and I immediately was excited. Sister Startin dresses like, talks like, and acts just like Brighton. My sister. So… you could say we get along. Her husband is the greatest ward mission leader I’ve ever known. We had appointments set up for us less than an hour after we got there, and he has been filling our schedule ever since, along with the rest of this amazing ward.

Shortly after getting in the car with Sister Startin, Sister Busath and I learned that we would be serving with Elders in our ward. OUR WARD HAS TWO SETS OF MISSIONARIES. Not sure if you know this, but that is RARE, and it’s amazing. and inspired. I can just FEEL that this area is about to catch on fire and I can’t tell you how fun it is to work with missionaries in the SAME WARD BOUNDARIES. The ‘Smile’ Elders. They are the greatest. They also swept into the area.

SO if you are getting this, they just dropped 4  new missionaries into one ward. SO the ward is PUMPED. And the ward hasn’t had Sisters since they can remember… So we have been treated like…. like people that are really cool.  We were also homeless all week. Or as Sister Busath says, Houseless, because home is where the heart is and we have hearts. So members just took us in and we moved around, meeting all the BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL families here in smile.

We called the assistants on Tuesday night, when we realized we don’t know anything, and asked them how to do this. I’ve swept into areas before, but we got here without an area book, or any records, or ANYTHING. No car. No phone. No records. No book of mormons. No house. Nothing. Elder Lohan, an assistant who just left ‘Smile’ Prairie, gave us some comforting advice that night, “Well, you are basically opening a new area. Good luck!”

To show how much we didn’t know, we had to call the Elders and ask what city we were in. Turns out we are in Spokane. . . That’s embarrassing.

You can’t blame us though, the first three days here on the praire everything was covered in FOG. THICK FOG. and we couldn’t see anything. Now we know the area really well, because we basically learned it blind. 🙂

Also, to top off the first night, I found out I was suppose to be collecting reports from the sisters because I was Sister Training Leader. That seemed to be left out when I got transfer calls. 🙂 I love it though. What a blessing to get to know the sisters.

Living on the Prairie HAS BEEN SO FUN. Sister Busath and I don’t even know how to express our gratitude for how amazing this is. SO we just work. It has been amazing to talk to so many new people this week, even in the most awkward of circumstances. I am so grateful we just do it. It makes the work SO fun. And we are awkward, but we do our best.

The ‘Smile’ Elders, in our first day working with them asked me why I say everything weird. I think I just have this deep desire to be totally original and unique, so I don’t want to even talk like normal people…. or maybe I’m just awkward. Either way, I love being a missionary, and I love this work. I am so grateful that the Lord makes up for my weaknesses, no matter what they are.

I know that as we turn to the Savior and serve him with all of our heart might mind and strength, He will give us the abilities we need to move forward this work. We have the spirit, and the gifts of the spirit come with that! I feel that the enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, can truly be the spiritual gifts we are able to recieve to become more like our Savoir and move forward His work. I am grateful for those gifts. I am grateful for my Savior. I am grateful for my companion and my mission and the beautiful SMILE PRAIRIE WARD I get to serve in.

This week EVERYTHING was frosted over. SO EVERYTHING WAS PERFECTLY WHITE. But not like when it’s covered in snow, it was frosted over in perfect detail. 🙂 I can’t even express how beautiful it is here. Ah. I am just grateful.

I promise the Church is True and Jesus Christ is My Savior. This is HIS CHURCH. The Book of Mormon is the EVIDENCE of these things. I know it. I will forever live it. And I CERTAINLY love it.

“And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;” 2 Nephi 21:2

When we are filled with the spirit we will become like our Savior Jesus Christ and adopt his qualities! Act on the things you learn and feel. Change.  It will bring you JOY!

Love,
Sister Meservy.

December 30th, 2013 — “I’ll put in a good word for the Mormons.”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from December 30th, 2013

I’ll put in a good word for the Mormons.

HELLO!

I hope y’all had a swell Christmas. 🙂  I did. Wanna hear about it?

ON MONDAY: I got to throw a big Zone P-day Party… at the Gilsons. The Canadian and Republic missionaries were the only ones that couldn’t make it because of distance, but it worked out for the rest of us. . . .

SO 18 missionaries went bowling… then we went to the Gilsons and made snowmen! 🙂 But don’t be fooled, we made them out of ice cream. So that was fun. 🙂 and messy. And delicious. Then we went out and had a snowball fight. I’ve learned that if you just sit in the snow, and scrape the snow on both sides of you really fast, you can fling mounds of snow up onto all that are standing around you. . . . I’ve also learned that if you sit in the snow too long in your missionary clothes… you look like you had an accident for the rest of the night. Luckily I have a long coat so I was covered when we missionaries went out Caroling together.

SPEAKING OF CAROLING: We had so many Miracles! My favorite was one of the last houses we went to. A woman suggested we go sing to her neighbor who was dying. So we knocked on the door and began our caroling. 🙂 A woman opened the door and invited us inside where we continued to sing to this man, whose health was rapidly declining. Then we got to talk with him. He was catholic, very strong catholic, but he LOVED missionaries. SO he told us stories about the missionaries that had served him in the past and how he told EVERYONE at his Catholic Church how wonderful the LDS missionaries are. . . .then he told us he didn’t have much longer to live and when he got to heaven he’d “put in a good word for the Mormons.” 🙂

Well we sang that wonderful man another song and prayed with him and his daughter, and off we were to carol some more. It was amazing though. 🙂

ON CHRISTMAS EVE: We got to deliver Christmas to a family of investigators we have. 🙂 and then we taught them about the true meaning of Christmas. When we were trying to set up our next appointment, all the kids got mad at their mom because she tried scheduling it while they would be at their dads. Man do I love them. 🙂

THEN WE WENT TO THE SCHICKS. So yall don’t know this, but the Schicks are one of the most amazing families in the world. Not even just in Deer Park, population 3,780… IN THE WHOLE WORLD. 6 beautiful Kids. 2 boys. 4 girls. 🙂 Which we all know is IDEAL for a family. 😉 [It’s also nice to have 10 more added on later, but we wont get into that.]

So we spent The evening before christmas with the Schicks acting out the nativity with some of their non member friends, and then I taught them and we played a good ol’ family game of “Rock, Rock”. . . . Basically it was one of the best nights of my life. The Oldest is 12, my niece alexa’s age, and then there is one Kenzie’s age, and one Kaylee’s age. 🙂 And Keith is probably just a year older than Sadie. 🙂 then throw in 2 more. IT WAS THE BEST NIGHT EVER. Anyway. I was one happy camper.

CHRISTMAS: Was wonderful as well. We started out with BREAKFAST at the Whittles who have two missionaries out. 🙂 So that was a blast. and DELICIOUS. Then we went to the Rasmussens, which is always amazing. And we had another Breakfast… 🙂 Then we went straight to the Schillingers (recent converts, basically my family here) and had LUNCH. 🙂 yep, more food. I’m the only one who finished my whole meal. Little did they know I’d already eaten two meals. 🙂 And then we went straight to the Butlers for Dinner. 🙂 What a day. What a feast. I almost couldn’t stomach it all….. But I prayed and the Lord blessed me. I didn’t eat much for like 2 days after that though. haha. Sister Tureson was certainly impressed that I could shovel down more than her, because she always gets mad and tells me I eat like a bird. I guess it’s my new health nut thing. I’m not as cool as Lynn and don’t plan to be, but I am excited to try more of her experiments and creations with her when I get home. 🙂

SKYPING: Well we came home from that crazy day, and amazing day, and SKYPED OUR FAMILIES. It was beautiful. I love my family. and I AM SO GRATEFUL they made is such a wonderful Christmas for me.

SO YEAH. This week was amazing. and let’s just say MY HEART IS FULL OF GRATITUDE FOR EVERYTHING AROUND ME. I can’t even express it. I am so grateful for EVERYTHING in my life right now, and everything I’ve ever had. And everything that will come in the future.

I KNOW that Heavenly Father is Molding my path just for me.

I love you all. I’ll try to be more spiritual next time. I know with everything inside of me that THIS CHURCH IS TRUE and the Atonement is REAL. I know it. I need it. And I am grateful for it.

Love,
Sister Sarah Jane Meservy

July 29, 2013 — “Transfers”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from July 29th, 2013

TRANSFERS!!!!

Alright, so let’s just be completely honest right now-  I’m terribly heartbroken.  I got transferred. So my new area will be in Deer Park, Washington- which is real close to Canada. I think it’s like the closest sister missionaries get to serving in Canada. ha.  All them Canadians are in my zone. 🙂 So that’s exciting.  And I will be 2nd training (so my companion will be in her second transfer). Her name is Sister Shepherd and I’m certain she is wonderful. I guess Deer Park is like living in the forest. So that’ll be awesome. I think I get to drive a truck. 🙂  And I’ll be the Sister Training Leader for the Zone. . . .  I’m pretty overwhelmed. And sad to be leaving my area- but give me a week and I’ll be loving everything about North Eastern Washington. 🙂  Out in the Boonies.

But on to the important stuff… 🙂

THIS. Week. WAS. Incredible.

I was pretty sure it was my last week with Sister Harper… So we had some fun.

A recent convert in our ward gave us some squash- so I followed my wonderful cousin McKenna’s example and made Squash people with my companion. We made each other. 🙂

We ran out of miles for the month… So we rode our bikes more than we usually would- and that added some nice entertainment for the week.  🙂  Amanda and Eddie (investigators) think Sister missionaries look like witches when they ride bikes in their skirts…. Like the witch on the Wizard of Oz. 🙂

This next week in my area is looking pretty fantastic for whoever is taking my place:

We are starting a Family History night on Wednesday’s. And we have potential investigators interested in coming. We are starting Bible Study back up on Thursdays. 🙂 and our recent converts are very excited. (It was Bible Study that got them interested in the church to start with).

and. . . . Amanda and Eddie are getting married on Wednesday. 🙂  Then they are getting Baptized on Saturday. 🙂  I was going to be singing at their Baptism… But I’ll just have to send them a card instead. 🙂 And I’ll be back in a year to see them get sealed anyway. 🙂 I can’t even tell you how excited I am for them.

To be honest- I think I got the good end of it all. I might be missing the results… but I got to help everyone in the process.  We have 5 investigators preparing to be baptized… and I’ve been able to help them all in the process. 🙂 I’d rather have it that way then coming in right when they get baptized- so I feel very blessed. 🙂

I laid awake in bed until 11:30 last night.  Just thinking. And I had a nice conversation with Heavenly Father. I’m so grateful to know he is aware of me. This area has been wonderful.  I love the members and all of our investigators. Heavenly Father has taught me a lot.

Yesterday in church we were talking about Sacrifices. The Gospel Principles teacher asked the question, “What is that makes a sacrifice, not a sacrifice?”  As I thought about it- I realized that getting immersed in Sacrifices- helps us to realize that they really aren’t sacrifices, but blessings.  Especially as I thought about missionary work.  When I thought about coming out here for a year and a half I was terrified. I was giving up a year and a half of my life to the Lord and I thought I’d be missing out on so much.  But being out here and getting so involved in this work- I know that I am not giving a year and a half to God, but He is giving a year and a half to me.  This time is something I know I will never be able to fully repay the Lord for.

As I thought about that, I realized that my whole life has really been a huge blessing.  I wouldn’t change anything about it if I could- because I know that God’s hand has been directing it all.  Knowing that- I know I can face anything that is ahead of me. Leaving this area at this time is going to be hard for me, but I know that this will be best for me and for the people I love.

After I got done fear-busting some new sisters today, President came up to me and asked how I felt about my new assignment as Sister-Trainer-Leader.  I was honest and told him I was nervous, but excited. He, being a wonderful president, assured me that He knew that I was needed there.

The Church is True.  God is VERY AWARE OF YOU.

Alma 26:37 “Now my brethren, we see that God is mindful of every people, whatsoever land they may be in; yea, he numbereth his people, and his bowels of mercy are over all the earth. Now this is my joy, and my great thanksgiving; yea, and I will give thanks unto my God forever. Amen.”

3 Ne 13:

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin;

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, even so will he clothe you, if ye are not of little faith.

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.

I promise you that as you put God first in your life, you will see great blessings, and you will feel of His love.  A love that can get you through any trial, heartbreak, or setback. He is aware of you and he will take care of you.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!! 🙂 Thanks to those who send me letters. 🙂

Love,

SIS Meservy.

July 15, 2013 — Week #18 “So… I’ll put John as a back up – to the Chickens”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from July 15th, 2013

Subject:   So… I’ll put John as a back up – to the Chickens.

Sister Meservy at BEST MISSION STOP

2013-07-15-1431_Sarah_2757

Dear Family and Friends,

Alright, This week was eventful…

We had interviews with president and he told me that as I train I can’t let the fire die in my new companion.  She’s on fire. He told me I have to be careful not to let that fire die.

So the next day… my companion was standing by the gas stove… and I accidentally started the burner while her arm was over it. Oops.

Just trying to keep the fire going.

Then, the members we live with went out of town and I set the fire alarm off by burning my toast.

No worries though. I figured out how to turn it off. Nobody died. The church is still true.  And We are keeping the fire burning. 🙂

We got to help Amanda plan her wedding- and I am so amazed with how the ward is just flying in and helping out! 🙂 I LOVE FELLOWSHIPPERS!!  If you want to be cool- fellowship somebody into the church.  Remember how much God loves you, and remember how much He loves them.  He needs you to help them feel that love! Don’t be scared to invite people to church, or over to meet with the missionaries. There is no failure in inviting.

My new favorite scripture story is the story of Samuel the Lamanite in Helaman 13.

Samuel goes to teach the Nephites and they kick him out of the city. Then, the spirit of the Lord tells Samuel that he must return to preach unto them again.  So, Samuel being incredibly faithful, listens and goes back- but the Nephites wont even let him into the city.

So let’s just pause and think about this. How often does the spirit prompt us to do something, we try, something gets in the way, and we give up.  Sometimes we just think, “Hmm… well, I tried to follow the spirit.  I guess the Lord just wanted me to try.”

Well… Samuel, being awesome, decided that he is going to find a way to follow the spirit. So he climbs on a wall. How, you might ask,  as so many members seem to, did Samuel get on the wall?!  I have no idea. But he did it.  He climbed upon the wall and preached to those who hated him for doing so.

Let’s be honest, it might be a little easier to talk to our friends and neighbors than to talk to a group of people who want you to die.

So just take a minute and think- what is your wall? What wall do you need to climb to become a missionary.  Don’t give up because it’s not completely easy.  Find a way.  The Lord has commanded us to share his gospel. 🙂

Now I know what your thinking.  “Sister Meservy, GET OFF MY BACK.  I’m busy.  It’s hard. I don’t know how!”  Well. I’ll make a deal with you. But first I must enlighten yall with a story.

On Friday my beautiful companion and I parked across from a less active member.  We knocked on her door, but she wasn’t home.  So as we wandered back to the car I saw a husband and wife sitting on the curb to their home. I knew that I must go up and talk to them. EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE INVITED. Everyone deserves a chance.

Well they were a lovely couple and we had a nice conversation for a moment, but the husband hurried things up and said, “Alright, Let me just make this easier for you. Here in Liberty Lake it is against the law for people like you to come out and do what you are doing. You need to go get a license from City Hall if you want to be out doing what you are doing. That’s why we decided to move here. It’s against the law for you to knock doors here.”

We discussed for a moment… and then I apologized and said we would leave. His 5 year old daughter, as we were leaving said, “Come back here anytime!”

Well… we headed back and decided to visit some members down the road.  When we passed our car the man came running after us.  We turned around to talk with him and he began to tell us we needed to go to City Hall and tell them we were breaking the law.  We calmly sat and listened to his loud lecturing… and then told him that we were just going to a members home to visit.  To which he yelled some more and suggested forcefully that we had to move our car to park it in front of the members we were visiting because parking there was against the law for us.

Awesome.  🙂  Well…. I still love him, because his wife and daughter were quite pleasant and he must have just been trying to protect his family. From crazies like us out on the streets, breaking all the rules. 🙂

To make matters even better… We went into a members home and shared the message of Samuel the Lamanite.  As I read the words in verses 2 and 3… The spirit spoke to me:

“And it came to pass that he did preach, many days, repentance unto the people, and they did cast him out, and he was about to return to his own land.”
“But behold, the voice of the Lord came unto him, that he should return again, and prophesy unto the people whatsoever things should come into his heart.”

I literally laughed out loud in the members home because I knew that I had to return to talk with that man. . .

Pray for me… because I’m not sure how I’ll do it. But it’s going to happen. SO here’s the deal:

I promise that I’ll go back and talk to that man if you share the gospel this week as well. A’ight? God needs us to find a way to climb on the wall.  To share the gospel. 🙂

I love yall!

The Church is true!

Love,

Sister Meservy

PS:  “So… I’ll put John as a back up to the Chickens…”

I got to catch chickens this week.  🙂 Like I’ve said before: this is the mission of my dreams. 🙂
