July 14, 2014 — “Here comes the bride . . . .”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from July 14, 2014

Subject:  “Here comes the bride . . . .”

So this week as Sister Huffaker and I were planning I was getting pretty exhausted and overwhelmed. There I laid, on the ground, helplessly looking at the ceiling, when I let out a desperate cry, “I’M JUST NOT A PERFECT PLANNER LIKE GOD IS!”

Not realizing just how ridiculous I sounded, I wondered why Sister Huffaker laughed at me. Then she reminded me that I’m not supposed to be a perfect planner like God yet. He doesn’t even ask that of me.

There is a talk in the Ensign this month that talks about this idea. I’m gonna attach it so y’all can read it.

Then, I was studying a talk by Elder Terrence C. Smith. He talks about how we as humans can be pretty negative about ourselves. He says,

Why do we tend to think of the atonement primarily in terms of fixing ours ins rather than healing our adversity? Why do’t we have the same priority order as the prophets have had? (Alma 7) Well, I don’t completely understand that myself. It’s a complex question about human nature, but it’s probably for the same reason that we called the most beautiful and optimistic of Jesus’ parables, The Prodigal Son; rather than calling it, The Forgiving Father. We’re more than a little fixated on our faults down here, and also very reluctant to accept our acceptance.

He talks about applying the atonement to overcome sin by having Faith in Christ and Repenting. However, when adversity strikes, we can’t fix it by REPENTING. So often we try to repent of our adversities, and we are left feeling guilt for the troubles we have.

I know that I have been stuck in that boat again and again throughout my life. Just this morning I was repenting and feeling guilty for something that was totally an accident. I was washing the car with my companion and the sponge we were using had something in it. We weren’t aware so we scrubbed away at the sap spots on our car. Well… instead of removing the sap we removed the finish of the car. I felt terrible when I realized what was happening. It ruined my morning. Luckily, Elder Smith’s words kept repeating though my mind. As I prayed I understood. THIS WAS A MORNING OF ADVERSITY.  We called Elder Handy (Office Senior Missionary) to ask him about the car and he was as understanding as Heavenly Father was.

To apply the atonement for adversity, repenting of it doesn’t work. We must still have Faith in Christ, but next we need to pray for help to overcome our struggles, and then we need to SERVE.

One of the young women leaders cut her hand this week right on her palm. It got infected and has really been bothering her since she cut it. However, having that cut, right in her palm, has reminded her of the Savior, again and again. She has thought more of his sacrifice for her than ever before. Just as it is with so many of our weaknesses, they are a reminder to us of our Savior Jesus Christ. We are here to prepare to meet God. We are here to grow. I love this life.

President Mullen gave me a blessing a few weeks ago and in it he blessed me to work with the Young Women, to help them see their worth and potential.  Well, here is a list of our progressing investigators since then:

Bozhi Harp. 16
Kelsi Blaser. 16
Chelsea Tremblay. 17

I LOVE TEACHING YOUNG WOMEN! All three of them want to be baptized. I love them SO much. Heavenly Father is so aware of each of them and so aware of me. 🙂

Also… We went to help our Recent Convert, Russ Lucki, clean out his house, and he gave me his late wife’s wedding dress…. It is really pretty.     haha.

ANYWAY. LOVE YOU LOADS FAMILY!

LOVE,
Sister M

As Sarah’s Dad I am assuming this relates to the subject of this weeks email

July 7, 2014 — “So . . . Are you from Nashville?”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from July 7, 2014

Subject:  “So . . . Are you from Nashville?”

Hello, my friends,

I LOVE MY NEW COMPANION, SISTER HUFFAKER!!!!!

We both just want to be so obedient, and work hard, and finish our missions strong. She came out one transfer after me and was trained by my trainer, Sister Hood! 🙂 We were unified from day one and I just love it! We’ve been on exchanges over the last few transfers, and I just really like her.

We’ve been living in a mansion this week… Basically. And the member we are living with brings us fresh fruit from her garden regularly. I am in HEAVEN. It’s way out in the sticks in a private community in Deer Park (but still in our ward boundaries) and we saw a HUGE animal outside yesterday morning. Embarrassingly enough I’m not sure what the animal was. It was a big cat. Bigger than a cougar, and it was spotted. . . . Any ideas? It crossed the road elegantly in front of our car and then jumped into the bushes. SO COOL.
However, it’ll be nice to go back to Sister Taylor’s house again this week and be closer to everything so that we won’t have to use so many miles every day. 🙂

I’ve been super exhausted lately, but it’s been great to see how Heavenly Father can use me when I just keep working, no matter how tired I am. 🙂 I am so grateful for the Atonement of Jesus Christ and how it transforms me and changes me. On Saturday I was feeling particularly exhausted, so we pulled over and asked for some extra help and guidance, then we went to contact some referrals. MIRACLES. We met Sister Hyer’s next door neighbor who readily invited us in and let us teach her about the restoration. SHE IS AN AMAZING WOMAN. Therese. She is full of faith, but struggles to believe there was ever an apostasy. We ready Amos 8:11-12 and talked about how it was prophesied in the bible that there would be an apostasy, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
“And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.”
Then we invited her to study it out and pray to know if these things are true. I am so grateful to know that our loving Heavenly Father did allow there to be an apostasy, so that the contrast of the truth restored could be so clear! 🙂 I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet chosen by God.

Sister Huffaker and I got to teach the restoration and sing at our investigator, Russell Lucki’s, baptism yesterday and again the spirit bore witness to me that this is Christ’s church! 🙂 I love being his servant. Russell had to make a lot of changes to be baptized, and to see the light in him after he was washed clean was amazing. I know there is power in the priesthood.

After the baptism a man from another ward came up to me and said, “Where are you from?… I just spent a lot of time in Nashville, and you sound like you are from there.”

I guess having a trainer from the south has impacted me more than I knew. Haha. 😉

We also got an amazing new investigator this week. Her name is Kelsi and she’s 16. She was at church yesterday and she was telling everything that she wants to be baptized soon. LOVE THAT. She’s already been reading a ton of the Book of Mormon because of her member friends and she has already prayed to know if it is true! When we asked her to pray with us, in her prayer she said, “Please help me, and please help everyone here to know that this message is true. Thank you for showing me your church.”

She is AMAZING. I know that as we expect miracles like this, and pray for them, and do all that we can, OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS READY TO BLESS US WITH GIANT MIRACLES. 🙂 Sister Huffaker and I are going to be seeing plenty of miracles this transfer. Scripture worthy. 🙂 I know that this is the work of the Almighty
God and with His power we can do all things. Even when we’re serving in the sticks. 🙂

I am imperfect and I realize that more and more every day– BUT I HAVE A SAVIOR FOR THAT. I am so grateful to know that I can change.  Ether 12:27 “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

I know that my Savior is making me strong. I love Him. I love being a missionary!

Keep the Faith, my friends! 🙂 Remember, God is a God of MIRACLES!

LOVE,
Sister Sarah Jane Meservy

June 30, 2014 — “I can’t see past Sister Meservy’s hair.”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from June 30, 2014

Subject:  “I can’t see past Sister Meservy’s hair.”
To all the inhabitants of the universe,

Turns out there is more than one bigfoot. Bigfoot’s are nocturnal animals though, so there are slim chances Sister Tea and I would see one together. They are harry, between 11-15 feet tall. And they chase deer. Who knew. I learned all of these facts from some members we like to eat dinner with. I also learned that a Supersaurus is a dinosaur. Rad.

Speaking of harry things, that seems to be the joke in Nine Mile Falls: Sister Meservy has a lot of hair.

Kate, a 4 year old in the ward, picked a My Little Pony look alike for me that had a crazy curly fro.
“That’s a lot of hair,” Is a statement I hear a lot around the missionaries.

Elder Ebmeyer, my district leader, was trying to see the chalk board at district meeting. Sister Tea asked if he would look at her picture and he said, “I can’t see past Sister Meservy’s hair.”

It seemed like a fitting way to end the transfer of hair jokes.

So many miracles to report, but I think my silly computer is kicking me off!!!  SO I will try to report quickly:

Random man in the Walmart parking lot that we invited to church 3 weeks ago came yesterday and loved it! He is amazing. Commented a bunch in Gospel Principles and everything. His name is Kingsly.

Bozhi Harp is progressing and I think she will get baptized soon!  Even with the Bulgarian language barrier. She is teaching me Bulgarian. 🙂

“oeuzaiu te” means I love you. 🙂

I love that the spirit can truly speak all languages.

Music is also a universal language. We got in with some less actives that have been very uninterested. We asked if we could come sing to them and they let us come and jam with them. Singing all kinds of crazy things like “Joseph Smiths First Prayer” “How Great Thou Art” and “Come Come Ye Saints” It opened their hearts and we were able to talk about the blessings of the gospel and hear their concerns with coming to church! This was huge!

And I got to play Brother Toone’s 12 string guitar. 🙂

Sadly, Sister Tea got transferred, so she will be leaving tomorrow. I have a feeling we will be singing a lot between now and then. 🙂

Luckily, Sister Huffaker is my new companion. She is the Sister I sang with in the singles ward a while back. So we’ll still be rockin’ out here in Nine Mile, and singing at Russell Lucki’s baptism next Sunday.

I am so grateful for the gift of music to soften hearts. I am so grateful my Heavenly Father lets me be a part of this work. I love my area. I love my mission. I love my Savior.

I believe in Christ.

2 Nephi 25:23
For we labor diligently…. to persuade [God’s] children… to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

I couldn’t do any of this without my Savior and my Heavenly Father- but with their help this is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!

Keep working hard my friends. 🙂

The Gospel is True!

Love,
Sister Meservy

June 23, 2014 — “Blast to the Pasts”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from June 23, 2014

Subject:  “Blast to the Pasts

SO MUCH TO SAY.I GOT TO GO TO GEMMA’S BAPTISM THIS WEEK. We got there and guess what? All the baptismal clothes had been taken from every church in the stake.  They were at the temple for a youth temple trip. So… to stall as everyone waited for the clothes to arrive- we took the group on a CHURCH TOUR. It was the greatest. After we did all the regular things in the chapel, people filed out to go to the font, and I leaned over to talk to the kids in the front because they weren’t all members. Brianna (gemma’s daughter) said to me, “This is Dakota, he’s never been to church before.”

“No way?! How do you feel Dakota?” I asked.

“I feel new.” Dakota responded.

Dakota was probably 10. 🙂 I told him that was the spirit and we continued on.

Then Gemma got baptized and I got to see it. She is amazing. Sister Tea and I sang “Joseph Smith’s First Prayer” to the tune of Come Thou Fount with my guitar and the spirit was so strong.

We got to sing that song in a members home yesterday as well.  I love the spirit music can bring. Not sure if I’ve mentioned this but my companion has a beautiful voice and she is very musically talented.  In all of our breaks we are basically just learning new hymn arrangements to share in our lessons. It has been amazing to see the power of music and the spirit.

I know with all my heart that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. It is so vital for every one of us to study the Book of Mormon and gain this testimony for ourselves! 🙂

Anyway, the baptism was amazing. I’ll try to send pictures!

This week we also had interviews with our mission president. He is amazing. He told me that when he sees Sister Tea and I together he thinks that we were meant for each other. I’d have to agree. 🙂 She is absolutely amazing.

We got to go to this awesome activity in the Valley on Saturday. The Valley Stake put on a youth missionary activity. They sent 2 youth with one missionary to go out and do missionary work. There were over 60 companionship’s out in one stake — inviting others to come unto Christ. And the best part is — I GOT TO GO BACK TO MICA PEAK (my second area) and have Brother Gummersall as my ward mission leader again. 🙂 It was amazing to take the youth around. I GOT SOME AMAZING GIRLS. Sister WIlkinson, who I lived with, was our driver, and guess what appointment they had me scheduled to go to?

I’ll tell you a story first. When I got called to Spokane I was in Brittany Rigby’s ward at BYU. She is amazing. A few weeks after she left on her mission, I got transferred into her home ward. Mica Peak. That’s when I found out her mom wasn’t a member of the church. Well I got to know Sister Rigby and loved everything about her. She was always a tender mercy for me when I was in the valley. Well, when I got my assignment on Saturday, they were sending me to teach the Rigbys! There was much rejoicing when I saw them. 🙂 Then, I had to do the hard stuff. I felt prompted to ask Sister Rigby why she wasn’t baptized and dive into meeting her needs, but I was scared.  Anyway, after getting up the guts, I asked a bunch of hard and intruding questions, and it all came out. To make a long story short, Sister Rigby wants to be baptized and she is going to be. She bore her testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel and the spirit filled the room. Her home teacher and his wife were in tears as they rejoiced at hearing that their dear friend was going to be baptized and wanted to go to the temple with her husband and family! I can’t tell you what a tender mercy it was for me to go teach her and get to go back to Liberty Lake. I feel like a whole in my heart has been completely healed. I did a terrible job explaining that story– But I promise, it was amazing. Heavenly Father is so aware of every one of us. I love Him.

Today I was studying in Alma 43 and I read about the Lamanites and the Nephites and the different reasons they fought.  In verse 45 it says, “Nevertheless, the Nephites were inspired by a better cause, for they were not fighting for monarchy nor power but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children, and their all, yea, for their rites of worship and their church.

I had the though, What inspires me? What is my reason to fight? What is my reason to endure? I know that as we put our Heavenly Father, our Families, and our religion first- we can overcome  all things. We will be inspired by a better cause than anything that will try to come against us.

I know that this church is true. I love my mission. I love my Savior.

Love,
Sister Meservy!

June 16, 2014 — “2,500 sheets of toilet paper later . . . Awkward!”

Sister Meservy’s Letter from June 16, 2014

Subject:  “2,500 sheets of toilet paper later . . . Awkward!

Well Howdy Neighbors! It hasn’t been long, since I last wrote on Wednesday, so there isn’t much to update on. Especially because my companion and I got sick. I kept working for the first 4 days of my sickness and it kept getting worse. Then I got kicked out of someones house. As our investigator from Bulgaria, Bozhi, would sing, :”Awkwar!”

Not sure how I got Sister Tea sick, but I did. Possibly from spending all of our time with each other. Or maybe because I can’t seem to keep a normal distance from her. She likes to call me her backpack. . . . Either way, I got her sick. So we took the day on Saturday to rest and recover. And we filled over 2,500 sheets of toilet paper with drainage. Throwing the toilet paper roll back and forth. Last night she screamed at me while I was asleep, “I NEED THE TOILET PAPER!”  (Sound familiar, Jeff?).

Well, since my companion knows how to rest, she recovered quickly, and I am still sick. Haha. But that’s okay! 🙂 I am able to function now and seem to be kicking this nasty vermin. Hopefully I won’t get kicked out of any more houses because of it.

One of the biggest blessing of being able to lay in bed for a day, was reflecting on my mission thus far. I felt and overwhelming amount of God’s love and knew that I was doing what he wanted me to do. It was amazing. I am so grateful to be able to recognize the voice of the spirit. I am grateful to be a missionary. This is the best time of my life and every day just gets better and better!

Gemma, from Smile, is getting baptized this FRIDAY! Can’t even tell you how stoked I am. I know that the gospel is true!

Love you loads!
